Player upgrade for Vimeo

Artsy video hosting site Vimeo – no keyboard cats here – has updated its playback software to favour the HTML5 standard alongside a host of other tweaks.

The programmers are promising much faster initial buffering and playback; purchase of on-demand content from within the player; a better way to share favourite videos; improved accessibility features; better responsiveness; and support for closed captions and subtitles.

Unlike YouTube, 4K playback is not yet implemented though Vimeo says it’s working on it.

Sadly, all the tweaks proved too much for one of our ancient but perfectly serviceable laptops, causing it to virtually lock up the entire computer. So maybe this upgrade won’t be such welcome news for people with older hardware.
