Price crash on Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
Temptation is supposedly one of the seven deadly sins (isn’t it?) but what are you supposed to do when Blackmagic Design slash – that really is the only appropriate word – the price of their teensy little Pocket Cinema Camera to just $495 – that’s around £300 GBP in real money, ex VAT.
If you’ve forgotten all about it, the BMPCC spec includes:-
- A Super16mm 1080 HD sensor
- 12-bit RAW and ProRes 4:2:2 recording
- 13 stops of dynamic range
- Micro 4/3 lens mount
- SD card recording ie cheap media
The price cut isn’t necessarily permanent but a summer promotion that the company is running until August 31st this year; they say there’s limited stock available (but they would say that, wouldn’t they?)
There are some well-documented flaws and irritations of the camera – Google the innumerable reviews for more – and you’ll probably want to add some accessories such as separate sound recording gear since it only offers a 3.5mm jack

[EDIT: 17 July 2014] The best price we spotted when this announcement was made yesterday, for the camera body only, exc. lens was £295; weirdly it’s now shot up by £30 at both places we listed, so it’s now £325 at ProAV and the same at Creative Video. No, we don’t know why that should happen overnight :-(
(Update November 2014: If you want to buy one now we recommend clicking on our Amazon link http://amzn.to/1pNZFAp not least because we get a small commission that way and are very grateful for it.)
