New compact cameras from Sony
Sony has unveiled updates to its long-standing and very popular Alpha x000 line (such as the 5000 and 6400)
Vloggers will adore the – sadly much more expensive – new Alpha 6600 as it now incorporates both a microphone jack and a headphone jack. Such luxury! Plus that model has five-axis in-body image stabilisation.
The lesser Alpha 6100 model has the mic jack but not the monitoring or the inbuilt stabiliser, relying on the lens for the latter job so you’d need to pick suitable lenses.
4K video is supported at up to 25/30fps UHD (3840 x 2160) at 100Mbps in XAVC-S format
Both cameras sport a 24.2 megapixel image sensor and autofocus time of 0.02 seconds. Sony says the cameras have 425 focal-plane phase-detection AF points covering approximately 84% of the image area and 425 contrast-detection AF points. Both cameras have Sony’s real-time “eye tracking” focus tech too.
A 180-degree tiltable, 3.0-type 921k-dot (approx) LCD touch screen is included.
The A6600 now uses Sony’s Z batteries and has a magnesium alloy chassis that’s said to be dust and moisture resistant
Also new are two lenses, the E 16-55mm F2.8 G standard zoom and the E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto.
The pricing’s not exactly bargain basement; the Alpha 6600 will ship in Europe in October 2019 for around €1600 (body only) or with the SEL18135 lens for €2000.
The Alpha 6100 will ship for around €900 (body only), with the SEL1650 lens for €1000 or with the SEL1650 and SEL55210 for approx €1250.
